The Joy of Russian Style Kombucha

I have to admit something... I would not be a kombucha drinker if it weren't for the culture I have. I like to love the things I put in my body. I don't do well with sour flavours and I am not consistent with things I don't enjoy. I am aware that I am not so different from many people out there... I am charmed by decadence, beauty and a sense of luxury. I hate to feel like I am doing things just because they are good for me.

For 15 years I have been brewing koombucha using my authentic Russian culture. Over time it became clear to me that there is something fundamentally different between the kombucha it produces compared with the kombucha I have tried elsewhere.

This style of kombucha adds a festive element to any occasion, whether it’s an afternoon pick-me-up or served in nice glasses with dinner. Russian style kombucha bridges the divide between luxury drink and heath tonic.

The Truth About Cans

Ethical Soda Kombucha is packaged in cans. We were very deliberate with this decision and want to let you know why. Here are out top reasons for settling on this packaging option.

1. YOUR SAFETY: Kombucha is a live, carbonated product which naturally builds pressure and continues to ferment every so slightly over time. As pressure builds, the glass packaging can become volatile; especially if left in a warm environment (under your car seat for example, by accident of course!). We wanted to bring a really live and authentic kombucha to our customers, but couldn't live with the risk of someone getting hurt. Thats the number one reason why we settled on cans. While a can will still build pressure and eventually make a mess when it starts to leak, it is not dangerous. We plan to run a continuous campaign reminding our customers to refrigerate and carefully open our product to hopefully keep messes to a minimum as well!

2. THE ENVIRONMENT: Our kombucha in cans uses 40% less fossil fuels during shipping to our customers than the same product in a glass bottle! That means a lot to us and is the next big reason why we decided cans were great! Besides the shipping benefits when the packaging is full, our empty containers in transit to our facility and in transit to remote recycling plants use vastly less fossil fuels. In fact more than 30 of our cans can be transported for the cost of one glass bottle of the same volume! When it comes to recycling, the aluminum can is recycled at an energy cost of about a tenth of the energy used to recycle a glass bottle of the same volume. We were definitely going with cans!

3. PROTECTING THE QUALITY OF OUR PRODUCT: The cans offer a dark environment where the natural bacterial cultures and berry pigments can survive unaltered for long periods of time. Both are easily damaged by light and this affects the quality of the beverage. Note that the kombucha never comes in contact with aluminum as the cans are lined. The lining is rated as absolutely safe in environments maintained at or below 5 degrees C. Because our beverage never reaches a temperature above 5 C, we found no reason to be worried about the lining.

There were just too many benefits to the cans to not go that way!
